American Sojourn is a series of portraits that depict various idealized American landscapes. It was conceived as a piece for full orchestra in 2007 and was ultimately performed in its original version several times; however, the relative difficulty of finding performances for orchestral music encouraged me to arrange a more versatile adaptation. The result was an arrangement for strings that could be played by an ensemble as small as five players or by one as large as a string orchestra. I revised the work for the last time in 2012 and added optional percussion parts, and it is this version that performed most often today.
