Rugged Comfort was composed in a few weeks during the summer of 2012 in Brevard, NC. I decided to give it the subtitle “duet for three violins and piano” to explain the true nature of the roles of the instruments in the piece. The three violins act as a singular unit rather than as independent entities, and their interaction with the piano—full of bickering and playful exchanges—forms the basis of the duet.
